What does an orgasm “feel” like to a woman?

New research reflects what women have been saying for years, orgasm from clitoral (external) stimulation feels completely different than an orgasm originating from vaginal intercourse. And different from anal intercourse, for that matter.

Women are amazing in their capacity to experience pleasure! And now the fMRIs can document just how expansive and vast female sexuality is.

Two different nerves go to different parts of the brain. Of course we feel these orgasms differently. Touching the clitoris stimulates the pudendal nerve. Stimulating the upper (deeper) parts of the vagina and cervix registers a completely different nerve. These nerves register in slightly different areas of the brain.

Sex is never that straightforward. Where is gets complicated is when the two types of stimulation happen at the same time. And this is nearly all of the time.

The simple act of a penis going inside a vagina will stimulate:

  1. Internal clitoris – the clitoral arms (crura) that extend around the lower portion of the vagina)

  2. G-Spot (clitoral tissue surrounding the urethra)

  3. External clitoris indirectly (motion of intercourse can pulling the labia over the clitoris).

  4. Cervix

It all feels great, but what is the most likely to lead to an orgasm?

The Clitoris wins, hands down. Only 30% of women will orgasm from vaginal stimulation alone (without clitoral stimulation).

Why is clitoral so damn popular? Women will search desperately to have a clitoral orgasm with their partner. Why?

Because it is so amazingly enjoyable.

But, in the process, the other orgasms get downgraded. What I find in therapy is that most women don’t know what to look for when they want to experience other arousing and orgasmic sensations.

I went through the responses of hundred of women who have reported how each type of orgasm “feels.” Here is what they said:

Clitoral Orgasm:

  • intense

  • localized

  • explosive

Vaginal Orgasm:

  • whole body

  • deep

  • emotional

Knowing the difference feelings can open up a world of sexual pleasure. Expand your sexual repertoire by exploring the different types of orgasm. What do you feel?

Women describe their experiences of the four types of orgasm.
